Russia prepares to shoot film in space

Russia is trying to become the first country to shoot a film in space. The country plans to send an actress and director to the International Space Station (ISS), 250 miles or 402.3 kilometers above Earth, in October 2021.

This was done to prepare for 'Vyzov (The Challenge)', a film where a surgeon must operate on a sick cosmonaut in outer space. His medical condition prevented the cosmonaut from receiving treatment on Earth.

The Ria Novosti news agency reported that 35-year-old Yulia Peresild will star in the film. Meanwhile, the Vyzov film will be directed by Klim Shipenko, who also takes pictures in space.

Once elected, Yulia Peresild and Klim Shipenko had to undergo rigorous training before traveling to space to shoot the film 'The Challenge'.

Starting June 2021, together with two other students, they will start a preparatory program that includes flight training in zero gravity as well as parachute training.

After undergoing training, Yulia Peresild and Klim Shipenko will fly to the ISS from the cosmodrome space port of Baikonur in Kazakhstan aboard the Soyuz MS-19 spacecraft.

Yulia Peresild and Klim Shipenko are very well known in Russia. They were selected for the project after the Russian space agency Roscosmos opened the competition in November 2020.

Peresild has appeared in a number of Russian films and TV series. Meanwhile, Shipenko is best known for his film 'Serf' which was released in 2020. It has become one of the highest grossing films in Russia.

There has been no official announcement regarding the screening schedule for the film 'The Challenge'. The film was developed through a collaboration between Roscosmos and Channel One and the studios Yellow, Black and White.

Russia's plans to become the first country to shoot in space came after Tom Cruise and director Doug Liman, in 2020, revealed plans to work together to make a film in space.

The untitled and release date film was co-developed with SpaceX Elon Musk. Tom Cruise is said to be traveling into space and is based at the ISS, a multibillion dollar laboratory orbiting Earth.

ISS was launched in 1998 and is the result of a collaboration between the US, Russia and 14 other countries.
